Why Your iPhone Battery Drains Faster Than It Should
If your iPhone used to last all day and now barely makes it to noon, you're not imagining things. Here's what's actually going on and what you can do about it.
Battery health is one of those things that creeps up on you. Your phone doesn't suddenly stop holding a charge — it just gradually gets worse until one day you realise you're hunting for an outlet by 2pm.
Lithium-ion batteries wear out. Every phone does this.
iPhones use lithium-ion batteries, and every charge cycle slightly reduces the battery's maximum capacity. After about 500 full charge cycles, most batteries are sitting at 80% of their original capacity. That means if your phone originally lasted 10 hours, it now lasts 8 — math that shows up fast in real life.
You can check your current battery health by going to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. If the figure is below 80%, Apple themselves consider this "significantly degraded" and recommend a replacement.
Background apps are rarely the problem people think they are
The internet loves to blame background apps for battery drain. The truth is, iOS is pretty good at suspending background processes. Swiping up on apps in the task switcher doesn't usually make much difference — and can actually cause more battery use when apps have to fully reload.
More likely culprits: Location Services running constantly for apps that don't need it, push email checking every few minutes, and High Performance mode left on for screen brightness or always-on display features.
Some quick wins before you replace anything
- Lower screen brightness — this alone can add an hour or two
- Turn off Location Services for apps that don't need live location (Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services)
- Disable Background App Refresh for apps you don't need updating in the background (Settings → General → Background App Refresh)
- Check Settings → Battery → Battery Usage to see which apps are actually eating your charge
When none of that works
If your battery health is under 80%, or your phone is shutting down unexpectedly before it reaches 0%, it's time for a new battery. Battery replacements are one of the most common repairs we do — usually completed in under an hour and making an older phone feel brand new again.
A replacement battery costs a fraction of a new phone and can give you another couple of years of reliable use. Worth checking before you commit to an upgrade.
